As I write this, it is 42 degrees outside with a wind chill of 36…and it’s noon! Winter seems to have finally arrived. And when it’s this cold, we sell more red wine than any other time of the year. So right now, the hottest selling wines in our shop can be found in our great reds under $15 section.
Our patrons know they will find our staff’s favorite values in this section. So this section gets a lot of traffic and for good reason! Here’s what you will find there right now:
La Vielle Ferme Rouge, Cotes du Ventoux ($9.99) – A Rhone-styled wine from Provence, this is a little lighter than Cotes-du-Rhone and a good alternative to Pinot Noir. This is perhaps the perfect red wine for parties. 87 points – Robert Parker!
Cono Sur Merlot, Valle Central, Chile ($10.79) – A plump, juicy wine bursting with plum, blackberry, and chocolate notes. Great with hearty pasta dishes.
Porcupine Ridge Syrah, Coastal, South Africa ($11.99) – This wine is dark with notes of black cherry, bacon fat, and black pepper. Reminds me of a baby Hermitage. 88 points – Robert Parker!
Vega Morogona Tempranillo, Ribera del Jucar, Spain ($11.99) – Shows bright red cherry with vibrant acidity and minerality. This is a good food wine matching well with sausage, cheese and tomato sauces.
TintoNegro Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina ($11.99) – Well structured with soft, round, juicy plum and just a hint of oak spice. Good movie wine!
Rabid Red, California ($12.99) – A fun, but serious red blend of Cabernet, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and more, this wine shows good complexity!
La Posta “Cocina” Malbec/Syrah/Bonarda, Mendoza, Argentina ($14.99) – Gobs of ripe, dark, delicious fruit, toasty vanilla notes, and ample tannins for a framework. 90 Points – Robert Parker!
Monte Vicor Garnacha, Calatayud, Spain ($11.99) – Red cherry, plum, cedar, and licorice with a lengthy, fresh finish. Drink with meats and cheeses.
Pares Balta “Mas Petit” Cabernet Sauvignon/Garnacha, Penedes, Spain ($14.99) – This is mostly Cabernet with just enough Garnacha to soften it. Perfect with grilled beefsteak, this is one of my favorite wines of the year!
Bodegas Weinert “Carrascal” Malbec/Cabernet/Merlot, Mendoza, Argentina ($13.79) – Perhaps Argentina’s best producer of Bordeaux-styled wines, this offering combines ripe New World fruit with earthy leather, cedar, and graphite notes of classic Bordeaux.
Cono Sur Vision Cabernet Sauvignon, Maipo Valley, Chile ($13.99) – Showing red currant, blackberry, smoke, and a hint of pepper, this wine is well-structured with a long finish. A great value – classic Cabernet and a great steak wine!
Cartlidge & Browne Zinfandel, Sonoma County ($12.79) – Raspberry, black cherry, oak spice and leather. Great with BBQ or all by itself!
